The money and influence-peddling surrounding Trump’s second-term pardons have been much discussed. But less attention has been paid to another alarming feature: the secrecy.
Pardons appear to be selling at between $100k-$80k per. It looks like. Nothing says he can't sell them. there is no law against it. Of ciourse we don't have a law because even in our wildest dystonian future did we believe we woudl elecet -- of our own free will -- a POTUS who woujld do sucbh a thing. He wrote 15,000 of them for people in the insurection...blows my mind, utnl I remeber he's a criminal (36 felonies), an identified rapist, and insurectionist... and there you have it. Why wouldn't he sell them?
Respectfully, every time Liz says something like "the president has broad power to pardon" I want to scream. Say's who? SCOTUS you answer. Really? And where in the Constitution is "pardon" defined? (It's not) When faced with the first pardon cases SCOTUS had to reach back into English Common Law and Blackstone's Commentaries for guidance - suggesting that it is the Legislature which has the power to define the scope and parameters of the pardon power. As for it being an absolute power, tell that to Charles I, who lost his crown/head in part due to abuse of the pardon authority. If you doubt this SCOTUS commitment to the importance of legislative definition of Constitutional provisions take a minute to reread the 14th Amendment case on disqualification of those who have engaged in insurrection. The seemingly plain language of the Amendment was casually brushed aside in the absence of defining and process establishing legislation. BTW, are pardons revocable? By a subsequent president? If the power is absolute then there can be no restrictions on its revocation. In other words, those counting on a Trump pardon should not count on it - the brakes on administration to administration continuity are wayyyyyy off. So, please stop saying presidents have essentially unlimited pardoning power - they do not.
Thank you Liz for your insightful and professional assessment of the tRump pardon addiction. Knowing his MO, there is no doubt in my mind that there's a quid-pro-quo at play, the proceeds of which have undoubtedly been added to his $400 million war chest (that GOP candidates up for re-election have been begging for). As a former compliance professional (SEC-registered entities) who has also done forensic accounting I hope there is a all-encompassing accounting of all pardons granted (assuming the attendant paperwork hasn't been shredded), with a complete follow-the-money investigation. I'm currently free, but plan to upgrade because I highly value your work (and regret that I didn't go to law school).
Is there any way the statute of limitations can be altered to include the clock starts ticking only when the pardon is made public, using a stated process, such as posting on a specified area of the DOJ website?
Secrets, lies, coverups. That’s what we have come to expect from this regime. Also disappearances. Rubio? Patel? McConnell and Dunn. I just hope Trump doesn’t free the Tate brothers in order to keep Melanie’s from spilling the beans and to protect her precious Barron.
I wonder how much Trump is charging for pardons this year?

Lawyer Oyer Truth Teller! Thank you for your vowed commitment to Democracy!
Excellent reporting Liz! Thank you for keeping us informed. Trump has no oversight and it’s devastating to our country ‼️

You can bet there was something in it for the orange POS. Bet he has never done anything that didn't enrich him somehow.
I think the Pardoner should be responsible for related crimes as the of he person released from prison.

Ms Oyer, Your online writing and visual comments are truly a public service.
I believe you are the “canary in the coal mine” in an environment where it’s just easier to go along to get along.
You keep finding things in the administration, especially with pardons that need a much brighter light.
There are too many moments in history when citizens didn't pay attention and expected everything to be OK, but ended up with a mess.
A pattern we’ve seen from the 1930s is right in front of us; you have clear glasses on that focus on this authoritarian regime.
We Americans need to take off our rose-colored glasses and realize that if we don’t act quickly, we may never get a chance to do it.
From an outsider's perspective (UK) an untrammeled power to pardon is just ridiculous, an open invitation to abuse & corruption.
Though there seem to be many other presidential powers also needing trimming ...

I know there is a fee Trump charges for these pardons... but I also wonder if some of them have been pardoned bc
he may be trying to build another kind of Jan 6 peeps who could influence/interfere with the mid-terms.
This abuse of the pardon power must be addressed. I pray good will triumph over evil.
